Dominican Vocations - Types of Preaching
Types of Preaching

Dominican preaching, as we have seen, has been characterised by its doctrinal content and emphasis. In the early days of the Order, preaching in pulpits which were arranged in public places like town squares, was quite common. Preaching during liturgical celebrations had all but disappeared by the thirteenth century and was not restored fully until the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). Dominican preaching moved into the churches along with indoor pulpits, but preaching in other circumstances developed also.

Preaching associated with movements which lay people joined, such as the Rosary Sodality, the Holy Name of Jesus Sodality, to name just two, flourished for many centuries. Missions and retreats have been a mainstay during that time also. Preaching through writing and publishing has had a long and illustrious history too. The newer media involving broadcasting, podcasting, blogging, online social networking and so on, are areas that have yet to be used  to their full potential.
