Dominican Vocations - Rosary
|
The Rosary has had a special place in Order of Preachers since we have been charged as the principal promoters of this special devotional prayer. Tradition has it that the Blessed Virgin Mary gave the rosary to St Dominic, but it is beyond doubt that some form of the rosary existed before St Dominic’s time. The fact remains that the rosary became a major feature of Dominican preaching and Dominican spirituality. Having both recitation (exterior) and meditation (interior) aspects, the rosary fits into the Dominican prayer tradition of combining external and internal expressions of prayer. Its focus on the principal mysteries of Christianity – the incarnation and the death and resurrection of Christ – means it is close to the doctrinal preaching with which the Order was founded in the thirteenth century. Dominican friars do not just preach the rosary, they pray it daily, at least five mysteries, thereby meditating on key events in the life of Jesus Christ associated with his coming among us, his passion and death and his resurrection and glorification.
